Kyanite needs high pressure with moderate heat, the kind you get deep inside a continental collision. Sillimanite shows up when the temperature climbs high enough. There is even a single triple point, near 545 degrees Celsius and modest pressure, where all three can coexist.
This makes the trio a natural pressure gauge and thermometer built into the rock. Find kyanite in a schist, and you have learned something specific about how deep that rock was buried and how hot it got. The stone is, quite literally, a record of the conditions that made it, and I find that more impressive than anything the lore promises.

The second thing people underestimate is how delicate kyanite is to work with. That directional hardness, the very thing that makes it fascinating, also makes it a headache to cut. A lapidary has to read the stone carefully, because the same blade that resists a knife one way will split and flake the other way. Where Kyanite Comes From

Brazil is the main source of showy specimen material, with large blue and blue-green crystals coming out of Minas Gerais. In the United States, North Carolina and Georgia are the names to know, with deep blue and green blades coming out of the southern Appalachians.
