Peridot is the one stone in the case that does not bother trying to be subtle. It is that warm, slightly oily yellow-green you do not really see anywhere else, the color of a lime held up to a lamp. And here is the part most people never hear: some of the olivine that peridot is made of has fallen out of the sky inside meteorites. So in a very literal sense, this is one of the few gems that did not all start on Earth.

What Peridot Is
Peridot is the gem-quality form of a mineral called olivine, a magnesium-iron silicate that is common in the deep earth, even though gem-grade pieces are not. Chemically, it sits on a sliding scale between two end members: forsterite, the magnesium-rich end, and fayalite, the iron-rich end. Almost all peridot leans toward the forsterite side, with just enough iron to give it that color.
It scores about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. That is hard enough to hold up as a ring stone if you are reasonable with it, but softer than something like sapphire, so it can scuff and chip over the years of careless wear. Peridot also tends to be full of inclusions and tiny internal fractures, which is normal.
How It Gets Its Color (And Why That Is Unusual)
Here is the fact that actually makes peridot interesting to me, and it is not the metaphysical part. Most colored gems get their color from a trace impurity. A ruby is corundum with a little chromium in it. An emerald is beryl with a touch of chromium or vanadium. Take that impurity out and the stone would be colorless. The color is, in a sense, an accident riding along inside.
Peridot does not work that way. Its color is idiochromatic, a long word for a simple idea: the iron that turns it green is a built-in part of the mineral itself, not a stray guest. Olivine is an iron and magnesium silicate by definition. The iron is in the recipe. The green is not an impurity coloring a clear stone. It is the stone showing you what it is made of.
That is also why peridot comes in essentially one color. You get yellow-green to olive green, and that is the range. Ferrous iron pushes it greener, a little ferric iron pushes it more yellow, but you do not find blue or pink or red peridot, because the color is baked into the chemistry. Almost every other gem family fans out across a rainbow, depending on impurities. Peridot does not really get the option.
Where the Name Comes From
The honest answer is that nobody is completely sure. The word peridot probably traces back through Anglo-Norman, and one common guess is the Arabic faridat, meaning gem. Another points at an old French word for the inclusions and cloudiness you often see inside the stone. The etymologies do not agree, and I would rather tell you that than pick one and pretend it is settled.
Before the word peridot caught on, the stone often went by chrysolite, from the Greek chrysolithos, meaning golden stone, a nod to the warm flashes you can catch in it. You will also see it called the evening emerald, a Roman nickname earned because the green seemed to hold its glow as the light went down. Keep that emerald connection in mind, because it comes back later in a less flattering way.
A Genuinely Long History
Peridot has one of the longest paper trails of any gem, and most of it runs through a single small island. Off the coast of Egypt, in the Red Sea, there is a place now called Zabargad, also known as St. John’s Island. People have been pulling peridot out of it for more than 3,500 years. The ancient Egyptians mined it there, and it was important enough that classical writers wrote about it, even if they could not always agree on where exactly it was.
The Egyptians called peridot the gem of the sun and believed it offered protection against the fears that come at night. There are old stories about the island being so overrun with snakes that mining was miserable until a pharaoh supposedly had them driven into the sea. I am not vouching for the snakes, but the mining is real and very old.
Then there is Cleopatra. Her famous emerald collection is the stuff of legend, but a number of modern historians now think at least some of those emeralds were probably peridot. Egypt had peridot in quantity from Zabargad, and ancient eyes did not have the tools to reliably tell a deep peridot from an emerald. So the gem we are talking about may have been hiding inside one of history’s most famous jewelry stories under the wrong name.
The Part Where Science Actually Shows Up
This is where peridot earns the headline. Olivine forms deep inside the Earth’s mantle, well below the crust, and it reaches us because volcanic activity carries it up. That is why you find peridot in places with volcanic histories, and it is why some of it ends up somewhere strange. On the Big Island of Hawaii, there is a beach at Papakolea where the sand has a green cast to it. That green is olivine, eroded out of the local basalt grain by grain. It is not gem-grade, but it is the same mineral, scattered across a whole beach.
And then there are the meteorites. Certain stony-iron meteorites called pallasites are made of olivine crystals suspended in iron-nickel metal. They are thought to form at the boundary between the mantle and the metal core of a shattered asteroid, which is about as dramatic an origin as a rock can have. On top of that, the spectral signature of olivine has been spotted in the dust around young stars, and olivine showed up in comet samples a spacecraft brought home. So when people call peridot an extraterrestrial gem, that is not marketing. The mineral really does occur out in space.
Now, the honest read. None of that means a peridot in your hand fell from the sky. The vast majority of peridot is plain earthly olivine, dug out of the ground here. The space story is true about the mineral, not about your particular stone, and the leap from olivine existing in meteorites to this gem channeling cosmic energy into your life is belief, not fact. I think the real version is more impressive anyway: a mineral that forms in the mantle, washes up on Hawaiian beaches, and rides through space inside asteroids.

On care, peridot has a couple of honest weak spots. At 6.5 to 7 it is reasonably durable but not bulletproof, and it does not love sudden temperature swings or harsh chemicals. Skip the ultrasonic and steam cleaners, which can be rough on a stone already prone to internal fractures. Warm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth are all it needs. If you wear a peridot ring daily, expect some wear, and treat that as normal rather than a defect.

Pairing is a tradition-and-intention thing, not a chemistry thing. Stones do not combine into something new in a bag on your nightstand. People group them because the meanings rhyme:

Peridot is not a cheap or low-grade emerald. They are completely different minerals: emerald is a beryl, peridot is olivine, and the green comes from entirely different chemistry. Peridot just happened to share a color, which is how it ended up mislabeled in old collections and possibly in Cleopatra’s.
That same confusion gets exploited at the cheap end. The nickname evening emerald sounds romantic, but it has also been used to make plain peridot, or worse, green glass, sound like something it is not. Green glass is a classic stand-in, and the tells are not exotic. Glass tends to be too perfectly clean and bubbly inside, and it does not show peridot’s strong doubling, where the back facets can appear as two slightly offset images through the top. Real peridot also has that specific oily, slightly yellowish green that glass usually misses. If a so-called rare emerald-green peridot is being sold for a suspiciously low price under a dreamy name, slow down and ask what it actually is.
Where Peridot Comes From
Today, most of the peridot in the world comes out of the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona, where it is found in volcanic rock. Pakistan is the other major source, specifically a high-altitude part of Kashmir administered by Pakistan, where the weather is harsh enough that mining only really happens in the warmer months. Those stones are often prized for their size and clarity.
Beyond that, peridot comes from Myanmar and China, along with scattered localities. And then there is Zabargad, the old Egyptian island that started the whole story more than three and a half thousand years ago. Its modern mining wound down in the twentieth century, but it remains the historic heart of peridot.
Where Peridot Fits
