Rainbow moonstone is a plagioclase feldspar, the same chemistry as labradorite, and what you are seeing is labradorescence, those sharper multicolor flashes that pop on and off with the angle. Both are real feldspars, both are lovely, and neither is fake. But they are different minerals wearing the same trade name, and now you can tell them apart. Soft single sheen that floats is moonstone. Sharp rainbow flashes, often with little black flecks in the stone, is white labradorite being sold under a prettier label.
The other thing to watch for is genuine fakery, and the usual culprit is opalite. Opalite is man-made glass. It is not opal, not moonstone, not quartz, just a pretty manufactured glass, and a lot of cheap moonstone jewelry is actually opalite. The tells are not hard once you know them. Real adularescence has depth, a glow that sits inside the stone and moves as you turn it. Glass tends to glow on the surface, more uniform and a little dead, and it often throws an orange or fiery tint from a backing rather than that cool blue. Glass is also flawless inside, no inclusions at all, while real moonstone usually has tiny internal feathers and cracks.
